Varied retrieves can be imparted depending on how fish are behaving. A fast retrieve elicits a tight rolling pattern to imitate fleeing prey, even faster retrieves will create a rapid zig-zag, triggering strikes as the bait turns. Slower retrieve speeds impart an S-shape slalom to imitate a fatigued or dying baitfish. Mixing both types of retrieves on the cast gives anglers opportunities to figure out what the fish want.
